INUGSC in numbers

About INUGSC

Founded by the UCL Surgical Society, the International Undergraduate Surgical Conference (INUGSC) was established in 2011 as the first conference of its kind. Created to provide medical students from around the world with access to high-quality surgical education beyond the traditional school curricula, INUGSC’s emphasis remains on encouraging innovation and cross-cultural exchange, pushing practical training, and pursuing academic excellence.

Our conference has been widely recognised for its standards and impact and has received endorsements from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), the General Medical Council (GMC), and the British Medical Association (BMA). In 2023, its growing influence was further acknowledged when UCL Surgical Society received the Opportunities Award, following INUGSC’s recognition as the largest student-led surgical conference in the UK.

Widening participation

A second stream of the conference for sixth-form students from widening participation backgrounds.

Alongside the main programme, sixth formers take part in talks and hands-on workshops that help them explore a career in medicine more deeply and widen their curiosity.

In their words

Anonymous answers from the feedback form delegates filled in after INUGSC 2026.

What was the best part of the conference?

The workshops provided valuable hands-on opportunities to try out some of the surgical techniques that have not been covered in the pre-clinical years’ curriculum.

Intercalating medical student

What was the most valuable insight you gained from the talks?

I loved Professor Owase Jeelani’s talk as he inspired me to be more interested in surgical research, and taught me that making mistakes is not only just okay, but also a good learning opportunity.
